burning question: are makeovers worth it?

I caught the tail-end of an episode of What Not to Wear yesterday and lo and behold it was the juiciest part: when the subject/victim (reluctantly) sits in the salon chair and gets snipped and painted by the wonder duo Nick Arrojo and Carmindy. While I love watching this segment, since it's where the real transformation from dull and dowdy to glowy hot mama happens, I couldn't help but feel for the subject, as she uttered a line that I've heard time and again on the show: "I don't recognize myself."
Now, don't get me wrong, I think makeovers have merits in that they inevitably make anyone and everyone look a hundred times better and can do wonders for boosting self-esteem – (makeup artist Carmindy often reminds us of this, when she says "we're just bringing out what you already have"), but I have to wonder whether such drastic measures are worthwhile when the subject looks nothing like they used to and seems to lose a bit of who they are (but that's not to say that they won't gain it back, of course).
So what do you think: are makeovers worth it? Let me know in the comments.

Personally, I wouldn't let someone do a makeover on me unless I had a lot of say into what they did. The last time I let a person do what they wanted, I looked horrid! Instead of a nice bridal party updo, I got a pile of teased up hair that looked like a bird nest stuck on top of my head!

I think you have a very good point, however, so many women get stuck in a particular look. What they recognize may be a flashback to the 80's. You have to believe that the women that are on this show have to want to update their look or they wouldn't be on it. I just think change is hard, whether with your look, your job, your life, whatever..

A makeover in the hands of experts is a life-changing thing.

Unfortunately, there are so many bad "professionals" out there that are responsible for those god awful 80s moments!

I think you make a good point as well however with this particular show, they're not worth it in my opinion. The impression I get is the female (don't know her name) with the horrid grey streak is condescending, obnoxious, and down right rude. The victim spends the whole show getting ridiculed and put down with the constant sniping only to be made over in what they (the bitchy hosts) think is better and more fashionable. In that case, the person getting madeover is just getting made over into the hosts mini-mes. Hardly worth it.

I think it makes more sense to change one thing at a time. There was a period when I went from makeup counter to makeup counter asking, "What's the one thing you would do to change my look?" The girl would do something, and I would wear it around the mall for a couple of hours or even home, and then decide whether I wanted to come back and buy the product.

I finally found a great woman who I kept going back to for years. Sometimes I would say, "Tell me what I should change" and sometimes I would say, "I don't like the way I do my blush (or whatever), give me some ideas."

The few times I've had a makeover, I possibly looked better, but I didn't look like me. I wasn't comfortable with the change and it was too overwhelming to duplicate on a daily basis. You can't change everything about yourself in a single day, and anyway, I wouldn't want to.
