makeup 411: how to look younger

You know that show on TLC, Ten Years Younger? Well, this post is sort of along those lines, minus that humiliating glass fishbowl where people have to guess your real age. My Makeup 411 post on "How Not to Look Old" proved fairly popular, so I decided to offer up some makeup tips to help you trim off a few years. So channel your inner cheerleader, a la Hayden Panettiere, and prepare to look fresh-faced and lovely in five simple steps.
Get grooming. If you've never had it done, having your brows professionally groomed is one of the easiest ways to look younger in an instant. It does wonders to perk up your face and make you look more awake. Fill in sparse brows with a soft pencil or shadow and use a brow grooming gel such as Anastasia Brow Gel For Eyebrow Control, Clear to help keep hairs in place.

Brighten up. Give your eyes a radiant look and cover up those dark circles with an illuminating concealer or eye brightener such as Smashbox Photo Op Eye Brightener. Open up the eyes even more by using an eyelash curler such as the one by Shu Uemura.
Go light on the shimmer. We all know that hayden loves her shimmery shadows, but too mach razzle-dazzle will only highlight any fine lines, so try to steer clear of any overly mettalic or glimmery eyeshadows. That said, a little iridescence can help illuminate your eyes – try a slightly shimmery champagne shade such as MAC Shroom brushed only on the lids.

Royal flush. Pretty pink cheeks make you look healthy and alive, as though you've just gone to the gym (or finished a cheerleading session!). Use a pinky-peach shade such as the classic Nars Powder Blush in Orgasm on the apples of your cheeks to get a natural, out-in-the-fresh-air flush.
Go for the gloss. Forgo the matte lip and opt for a peachy gloss with a subtle iridescence, which gives the illusion of a plumper pout and helps to fill in fine lip lines.

Ooooh, I love Shroom and use it all the time (including right now!). I so agree with the eyebrows - I even managed to get Babsta to do hers - such a difference!

I admit though, I just can't bring myself to wear blush. It's probably because I have horrific memories of the stripe effect that was so commonplace in the eighties. And then in the nineties I went a little Goth-like (I know - shudder!!)

Love the tips - keep'em coming!

I was introduced to Smashbox Photo Op some months ago. It is the greatest product, I use it daily.

acadian librarian - shroom is so great - it's definitely a makeup bag staple. I'd love to see Babsta's eyebrows (I can't believe you coaxed her to go!) as for blush - I hear you on the fear of the 'stripey' look. But I think the formulations are a lot different that they used to be, so don't be afraid to try it out. It makes such a difference to brighten up the face. :)

appleblossom - I love Photo Op too. I only bring it out for times when I really, really need a wakeup because I love seeing the amazing effects. What are your other must-have products?
