We've all seen her: the woman with mask-like foundation, eyes rimmed with garrish green eyeshadow and lips painted a dark red – and who inevitably looks ten years older than her real age. While that look may have worked for Joan Crawford in the thirties and forties, retro, overdone makeup just looks old today and adds nothing but years to your face. So herewith, a few makeup tips to help freeze father time:
Use a light hand with concealer. Most makeup artists recommend spot-touching only those areas where you really need it (i.e. where skin is darker or red spots). A few dots over dark circles (well blended, of course) will ensure that you don't emphasize undereye lines.
Skip the foundation mask. On-camera celebrities may need that extra camouflaging help, but most of us commoners can afford to go without foundation. Seeing some of your "real" skin helps give you a glow and makes you look younger, while a mask of foundation just looks retro.

Opt for neutral eyes. It's pretty hard to overdo it with neutral shadows and lipsticks and most everyone looks good in them. Stick to a few key shades of shadow – a light champagne tone, a mid-tone brown or taupe and a dark brown shade are all you really need. MAC's N collection colors are great makeup bag staples. And neutral tones just look modern, as opposed to garrish green.
Skip the dark-red lips. While red lips were big for fall, the fact of the matter is, unless you're going clubbing, it's a hard look to pull off. And there's something about a deep color on the lips that just looks overdone and tends to age the face. Go with a pinky-peach lip such as Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Hug it Out to look current and polished.

Great advice. Thankfully I employ all of the above and then spritz with grapefruit fragrances. It is supposed to "fool" males into thinking you are six years younger than your actual age. I don't why I am trying to fool men. The Hubster loves me sans grapefruit, too.
Love the look of your blog.
Thanks Girl-Woman!
thanks for the tip on grapefruit fragrance - will have to try that one. I love anything citrusy...:)
Thanks so much!
I want to look six years younger!
your welcome, Jamie!
sara mu - I'm working on a post on that very topic! stay tuned!
Good points... Thankfully I use muted colors on the eyes and when I wear red, it's normally Clinique's Black Honey which is so sheer, it just gives a hint of color.
My foundation is very sheer but I admit I am hooked on it. I'll try to break myself of it though! I certainly don't want to look old!
acadian librarian - Clinique's Black Honey is a great choice because it gives a natural, your-lips-but-better look. It looks red in the tube, but it really goes on like a sheer pink.
As for foundation - if you're really attached to it, I don't think you have to give it up. just as long as you're using a light hand and not covering up your whole face (to let a little bit of "you" show through") you're fine. :)
