It would be easy to say that Kenzo fragrances are all about the packaging, that they're all style and no substance; just look at the bottle for its limited edition Amour Indian Holi – a stunning red-and-fuchsia-lacquered sculptural creation that's almost museum-worthy. But for me the outside is merely a taste of the loveliness that's inside, and Indian Holi is no exception. A new riff on the original Amour fragrance, Indian Holi was inspired by Kenzo's trek through India, and his experience of Holi, a festival of colors, love and life that marks the transition from the doldrums of winter into the joys and rebirth of spring. It's a musky floral that marries the softness of rice steam (a mark of the original Amour) and cherry blossom, with a peppery-floral heart of rose and peony and a musky-vanilla base. I expected more spiciness in the scent, but as always, Kenzo defies expectations. Neither fragrance family, the florals, or the musks, overpowers the others and the end result is a romantic, yet still mysterious scent that evokes the exoticism of India and a love of life.
