To ring in the new year, I'm doing a bit of crystal ball-gazing to decipher what will be new and next in the world of makeup and skincare. These are the beauty trends and ingredients I'm noticing and predict they'll be big in '08:
Argan Oil: This "new" miracle ingredient is actually centuries in the making. Derived from the argan tree, argan oil has been used by Morroccan women for years to heal and improve skin. It's rich in skin-nourishing essential fatty acids and vitamin E, making it the current darling of skincare brands including Liz Earle, ar457 and Kaeline.
High Def Makeup: While digital cameras and TVs are getting high-definition ready, so too are the makeup brands. Enter HD makeup, which delivers full-on, flawlessly natural coverage to camouflage what a crystal-clear image can't hide. Expect high-def makeup products that diffuse light and optically "blur" fine lines, thereby creating flawless skin. Cargo Cosmetics and Dior Beauty are just some of the brands getting in on high-tech beauty.

Oxygen in Skincare: I raved about Bliss's Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Facial Mask (based on Bliss Spa's in-house treatment) in my Best of Beauty 2007. Said to breathe new life into lacklustre skin, oxygen makes the skin look fresher and brighter. Other brands on the O2 bandwagon include Skyn Iceland and Peter Thomas Roth. Watch for more oxygen-based skincare on the horizon.

Makeup with Benefits: From products such as Smashbox Photo Op Undereye Brightener, which boasts marine collagen, red wine extract and peptides to the organic seaweed and vitamin C-packed Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Foundation, makeup is being fortified with skincare ingredients to combat aging. New players on the scene include Kimiko Beauty, whose Multi-Tasker Treatment Concealer purportedly firms and smoothes wrinkles.
Uber-Antioxidants: High-powered antioxidants such as those in acai and coffeeberry are where it's at for skincare. Coffeeberry, found in the Allure-approved Revalé Skin line, is reputed to have more antioxidants than green tea and pomegranate. The Amazonian berry acai, meanwhile, has been touted by Nicholas Perricone as one of the all-time top superfoods for its high antioxidant content. This nutrient powerhouse, said to improve skin's radiance, has been cropping up in skincare by Fresh and ingestible beauty line Borba. Expect to see more of these berry wonders, said to help even skin tone and protect the skin against nasty free radical damage (read: wrinkles).
