burning question: how important is product purity?

A while ago, I was gearing up to test a product by spa skincare brand Renee Rouleau and I happened to notice the ingredient label on the side - it was peppered with parabens in its various forms. While I was taken aback that parabens, a cosmetic preservative that's been linked with breast cancer (results have been inconclusive, but yikes!) would appear in a product line that's deemed to be "the best of nature," I went ahead and used it anyway (although I didn't use up the entire product - it's still sitting on my bathroom shelf, half-used). I was reminded of this today as I read In Women's Wear Daily that niche beauty brand Lalicious is relaunching its products without parabens. And Lalicious isn't the first to remove the ingredient from its products: Origins has recently also reformulated to become paraben-free and is currently phasing in products as we speak.
But all this got me curious to ask my readers about this: How cautious are you with beauty product ingredients? Do you steer clear of anything with parabens? Is green better?

Yes ma'am ... natural (and organic if possible) is definitely better in my book. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to even try products loaded with synthetic chemicals and parabens ... it's just not necessary anymore. The natural stuff yields results just as good or better, it's good for the bod, and good for the globe ... why do otherwise. great story and post - thanks for the info!!

it's a double-edged sword, i think. i find that some "all-naturals" are just as good, but some don't perform as well. i wouldn't say any of the all-naturals perform absolutely better. and, then i think, how much of what we are using is harmful to us now and they simply haven't figured it out yet? i don't seek out synthetic products, but if a product does what i want it to do, i buy it. if you look at the entire process as a whole, there is something in almost every product, all natural or not, that can be disputed. the packaging, the marketing, even the people who benefit from the profits. guess you gotta pick your battles!

I've gotta agree with ms glamourista here on this one. I've tried lots of products and though, I AM a green girl, and love my natural and organic stuff, some of them honestly don't work as well as others. You truly have to do the homework to see what works for you and it's true, some of all natural products still have some chemicals...or 'unhealthy' preservatives that could trick consumers! I still buy the synthetic products, like if i can't get a natural one that i want...but it doesn't give me the same results as say suki's products does...i believe in organic/natural after all thats the reason i no longer have acne!

Product purity is really important. I'm a guy, but I care what sort of creams and potions my wife uses. (And I use from time to time...)

You can read my full review of LaLicious from a Green angle here - http://1greenproduct.com/2008/07/beauty-bath-lalicious-body-products.html

Hope you find it interesting! (And remember, don't eat the Vanilla Body Butter even if it does smell irresistible.) ;-)
