I've always had a soft spot for Smith's Rosebud Salve; its retro-cool packaging (a hint of its century-old heritage) and subtle rosy scent had me hooked right away. And while at one time I only thought of it as just a lip balm, after turning it over to read the back of the little tin, I discovered it was so much more than that – it relieves chapped skin and even cures diaper rash. Ever since, I've been on the lookout for other all-in-one salves; since they replace a myriad of products and take up so little room, it's super-easy to just stash them in your purse or desk for those times of need. (And aren't we needy right now, against that frosty winter chill?)

Here are a couple of other multi-tasking skin balms I'm coveting:
Elizabeth Arden's Eight-Hour Cream Skin Protectant is a classic. It looks a bit like cooking grease in the tube, but don't let that scare you – this stuff is magical. Saves ragged cuticles and wherever else your skin needs some loving. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits, so it's perfect for scrapes and abrasions. While I wouldn't use it on my face (as it's a little too goopy for me), I have slathered it on my parched feet at night and covered them with socks. The result? Baby-soft tootsies.
Liz Earle's Superbalm is newer on the scene but no less fantastic. Made of plant oils and waxes, it's more of a solid as opposed to a cream, so it's great for rubbing on those rough spots like elbows. Love the botanical scent and the fact that it's not uber-greasy.
