fragrance notes: diesel fuel for life

You can always rely on Diesel to come out with irreverent, shock-and-awe ad campaigns (remember the one that recommended drinking urine to stay young?). But they also make some great scents which are surprisingly sophisticated with a bit of an edge, and the latest fragrance, Diesel Fuel for Life, is no exception. With notes of mandarin, blackcurrant and raspberry, I thought it would be a bit too sweet for my liking at first (the scent was inspired by a Venetian liqueur), but it's tempered by musk and patchouli, which give it a woody undertone, while pink peppercorn gives it a spicy edge. A soft, powdery note keeps it really feminine and pretty. It's immensely wearable, fresh enough to wear for summer and has great lasting power. As with all things Diesel, Fuel for Life has that trademark tongue-in-cheek touch (the ad campaign features the so-called "Society Against Legalization", which borrows imagery from anti-smoking and anti-drug messages, all with a weird sort of propanda-ish feel) and you can customize your perfume bottle, which reads "use with caution," with a little coat of leather or lace, depending on how "fast" you want to live your life. I chose the lacy sleeve, which reminds me of my grandmother's hairnets of old. How retro-cool is that?
