nails: the latest accessory?

I happened upon a post today on one of my new favourite blogs, The Beauty Counter, about the comeback of the "moon manicure" – basically a reverse French manicure, where the nail bed is painted red or dark and the moon is kept light. It originated in the roaring twenties, but was seen recently at the latest Dior fall collection (among other fall shows), in a purple and white incarnation. Nail embellishment is a trend that's been brewing for the last few seasons, and it's one that style maven Dita Von Teese has been sporting as her signature. From the Christian Louboutin manicure (where the top of the nail is painted black, and the underside is painted red) to more intricate two-toned looks seen on last fall's runways, and the launch of Sally Hansen's new line of nail-art pens, nails are having a moment. But why now? As I found out in an article I wrote recently for Elle Canada, with less money to throw around, nails are becoming accessories and statement-making pieces in themselves. They're a quick way to show off some style without breaking the bank.
So how about you? Would you delve into the nail-art trend? Let me know in the comments.

Do you know of any salons that do the reverse French manicure? I'm addicted to funky nails (though I stay away from fakes, bling and length) and would love to try it out! Toronto-area preferable...

If not, tips on how to do it myself?

Hi Devi,
I think any good professional manicurist should be able to do this for you. In Toronto, I like the ladies at Concepts Salon & Spa and Sweetgrass Spa.
If you wanted to do it yourself, I think you could use the stickers that come with an at-home French manicure kit (the ones you use to mask out the tips). Just place them on the moon area of your nail instead. I've never tried it myself, but it should give you the same effect.
Hope this helps!

OH MA GOODNESS!
I learned this technique in beauty school in 1991 and thought it was the most rediculous, useless thing to learn. This is the first time ive seen it since then!It actually looks cute here!IM SHOCKED!
Maybe all my practice on old lady roller sets will come in use again soon after all!
