Sorry for the dearth of posts of late, dear readers. Fact is, I've accepted a new position in the beauty sphere (which I'm quite excited about and hope to share details about soon). But in the meantime, things will be very quiet around here because SugarShock Beauty will be going on indefinite hiatus.
So yes, the news is bittersweet, but, onwards and upwards, as they say! You've no idea how much I've enjoyed sharing beauty scoops and product finds with you over the last couple of years. My readers are some of the coolest around.

liquid gold: vasanti magic liner

Eyeshadow color range is seemingly endless, but eyeliner colors just haven't kept up the pace, which poses quite the conundrum for us colored-eyeliner-lovers. So when I spy a particularly fab shade of metallic purple or cobalt blue shadow that would make for a killer liner, I'll dip my brush into water and then into the powder, pulling the old "liquid-eyeliner-in-a-pinch trick". But "in a pinch" is the operative phrase here, because let's face it, water doesn't have much staying power, and if you're in a hurry, the aforementioned process can seem entirely too fussy. So when I witnessed Vasanti's Magic Liner, a special potion that turns powder shadow into liquid eyeliner, I had one of those "wish-I-would've-thought-of-it" moments. It's basically a clear gel paired with a liner brush, that, when met with powder eyeshadow, becomes a pigmented, smudge-proof eyeliner. Brilliant! The best part? Dip the brush back in the tube, and it comes out clean and ready to take on the next color. Now, my beauty quandary is this: So many liner color options, so little time.

Beauty fiends like myself anxiously await the holiday season to see what kinds of gorgeousness the beauty brands will unleash upon us. Each season, the brands seem to one-up themselves by showcasing ever-showy baubles, palettes and trinkets – each one seemingly prettier than the last. And Cargo has wowed me with their newest holiday palettes, Mediterranean Nights and Hands of Hope. The shadows and bronzers, themselves ornamentally embossed, come packaged in chic black boxes with gold imprint that look like something straight out of Arabian Nights. The Hands of Hope palette offers up nine iridescent eye shadows, each carved out with the Hamsa hand – a symbol of peace, hope and prosperity. And the colors are breathtaking: some vibrant (like the jewelled purple) and some neutral (like the gorgeous Gunmetal Grey), they're just right for eye-makeup-look experimentation around the holidays.

Next up, we have the Mediterranean Nights palette, with four eyeshadows and two blush/bronzer duos inlaid with beautiful Middle Eastern-inspired patterns. This is the more neutral palette of the two, but no less beautiful. In fact, I had a hard time deciding which palette I liked more - they're both so stunning. Cargo shadows and bronzers are always top-notch: highly-pigmented, long-wearing, easily blendable and crease-free. These holiday gems are a prime chance to get extreme value for your money – (each are valued at roughly 100 bones, but priced around $30) – to treat yourself or to check off a couple of girlfriends on your gift-giving list this year.

Now, usually I steer clear of any beauty creams specifically designed for the girls, in the belief that that area will do well enough on its own, thank you very much. But lately, I've started to notice the effects of neglect in this region (read: the force of gravity), and in the name of prevention, have decided that my pair might just deserve some extra special attention beyond my typical body moisturizer. Behold the cheekily named cult product Boob Tube by Mama Mio, a rich decollete cream designed for "owners of boobs of all ages". The gist? Think of it as the quality of facial skincare, but for your boobs. It's packed with pretty much every most-hyped skincare ingredient known to man: CoQ10, to help protect collagen and boost skin strength; shea butter to improve elasticity and improve skin tone; and a whole host of oils, including olive, sweet almond, evening primrose and avocado, to nourish and replenish moisture. Why I love it: Boob Tube has the loveliest botanical-ly scent and its rich texture melts into skin without feeling greasy. too faced lashlight puts lashes under the spotlight

We've seen light-up lipglosses before, which come equipped with mini flashlights for touching up in the dark. And now comes Too Faced Lashlight, a mascara with an LED-lighted wand that shines a light on each and every lash for precise application. I'm not sure why you'd need this, unless, of course, you're a vampire and daylight makeup application is a no-no (and, for those of us who aren't creatures of the night, the idea of applying mascara in the dark would be sheer insanity). So for me, Lashlight fits squarely in the category of "Things that make you go: hmmm". It did, however, bring to mind my beloved Tweezlight, a nifty little gadget that's a tweezer fitted with a miniature flashlight, and that actually makes quick work of honing in on every stray brow hair that's ripe for the plucking. Sounds gimmicky, but Tweezlight is actually a pretty novel innovation.
But there was one feature about Lashlight that did capture my beauty imagination: the formula is said to contain millions of microscopic mirrors that bounce the light off of lashes for a bedazzling effect. So it could be worth checking out for that alone.

Bravo Evan Rachel Wood. It looks like you've finally found your stride, style-wise. For a while there, you were looking like Dita Von Teese's 'Mini Me,' and that was, well, more than a little creepy (considering both of you have dated and/or married the Dark Lord himself, Marilyn Manson). Well, we both know that little dalliance didn't really work out, but it surely put you in line to join the cast of True Blood and sink your teeth into the coveted role of Vampire Queen Sophie-Anne LeClerq. You're still channelling old Hollywood glam as Sophie, vamping it up with red lips and the like, but off-screen, I'm really loving your modern-girl beauty look. Your grey smokey eye is a refreshing take on the trend and it really brings out the steely-blue of your eyes. A lighter-than-usual lip, in a subtly shimmery rosy hue, keeps the look soft yet still glam. And while you've gone to the dark side again with your hair, the deep red hue really suits you and nicely off-sets your porcelain skin. Whatever it is you're doing, keep it up, because playing Miss Sophie-Anne really agrees with you.

I kind of love Kat Von D's "stickin-it-to-the-man" sense of style (read: tattoos-a-plenty and full-throttle makeup), which appeals to my inner goth-rebel. Those same sensibilities show up in her makeup line for Sephora, and her newest holiday palette offering, the True Romance Eyeshadow Palette in True Love, is about breakin' all the rules when it comes to beauty and eyeshadow pairings. While most palettes give us either "cool" or "warm" shades – (and never the twain shall meet) – True Love gives us both in one slick black matte case, and they're meant to be mixed and matched. Now, you might not think that purple and gold would go well together, but Kat's picks, most of which have a hit of metallic to them, mesh together surprisingly well, giving a sort of edgy royalty effect. The stand-outs are Peanut, an iridescent champagne with tinges of silver; Benji, a creamy, highly pigmented coppery gold; and Cholita, a deep, dark burgundy purple with subtle shimmer. Now go forth and blend.

Ask any beauty editor which skincare product they can't live without and chances are (in Canada at least), it's this unassuming little tower of power, the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. When I first entered the beauty magazine scene a few years ago and encountered this famed skin elixir, I was honestly a little bewildered, unsure of how to use this strange powder exfoliant that was said to smooth many a tired complexion. But then, after trying the rice-based Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant for myself, I became a believer. Unlike many exfoliators (of the so-called "mechanical" variety), the Daily Microfoliant has no visible granules, so it's not at all rough (read: no sandpaper-like feel here). Instead, when activated with water, the Microfoliant powder emulsifies and releases rice enzymes and salicylic acid to "micro-exfoliate" skin, smoothing and brightening all the way. It's also got a brightening complex infused within the formulation, with licorice and grapefruit extracts to help even skin tone. I did a double-take when I first saw Christina Ricci's red-carpet look from the recent Spike TV Scream Awards. At first, I thought her hair was pulled back into an updo, giving the effect of short hair. But upon further inspection, it appears that she has, in fact, gone for the chop. While she's always been on the shorter end of the hair spectrum, not many people can pull off a full-on crop. Christina, however, has the amazing bone structure to pull it off and she oozes class and simple chic. But it also helps to follow the golden beauty rule of donning a shorter 'do: you need to amp up the makeup to bring forth the feminine vibe. Christina gets it just right with smoldering eyes that contrast a lighter-hued, soft champagne-y eyeshadow on the lids next to the slightly tougher, sexy edge of fully-rimmed black-lined eyes. And is that lipliner I spy her wearing? If you'll notice, there looks to be a deeper, rosier hue on the outside of her lips and a frostier, lighter pink in the centre. This could be just a visual trick for the red-carpet, since, from far away, the color blends together as one. But as The Beauty Counter blog pointed out the other day about one Halle Berry, obvious lipliner á la En Vogue is on the way back.

this just in: coco rocha is the new face of rimmel london

Like most beauty/fashion aficionadas, I love me some Coco Rocha. Her versatility and chameleon-like haircolour changes and penchant for doing an Irish jig on the runway are totally refreshing in the modelling world (which tends to be known for bland, cookie-cutter Eastern Europeans devoid of personality). So I was thrilled to hear that she's been scooped up as the new face of Rimmel London, joining fellow models Kate Moss and Lily Cole. Another new face to watch? Georgia May Jagger, the love-child of Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger, also joins the Rimmel roster and will appear with Coco in the 2010 campaigns. Kudos to Rimmel for breaking the mold and signing on models rather than celebs to rep the brand. Even though it was just announced that Fergie is launching a fragrance with Avon, I have to wonder if this is a turning point in the celeb versus models showdown.

I busted out the winter coat this week to combat the uncharacteristically winter-like weather up here in Canadaland (even though winter's start date is actually more than two months away). That means I'm not only swathing myself in a wearable sleeping-bag, but also stocking up my arsenal of protective bodycare products to defend my skin against chilly winds. Usually, I don't give much thought to body washes, other than looking for anything that says "creamy" or "moisturizing", but I've found that the more hydrating a body wash claims to be, the heavier my skin feels. Luckily, there's some big news on the body wash front courtesy of Dove. With the Nutrium line of Body Washes, they've found a way to infuse needed moisture into skin deep down – 10 surface layers deep – so it doesn't simply sit at the surface. The Dove Deep Moisture Nourishing Body Wash with Nutrium Moisture gently cleanses, so you feel clean, but it doesn't wash away natural moisture; it actually replenishes with naturally-occurring lipids and soybean oil. Protective glycerin, a humectant, forms a kind of shield that helps hold in moisture. Post-shower, my skin feels fresh and hydrated but not cloaked in oil. And I don't skip the moisturizer afterwards – (body washes weren't made to replace body moisturizer) – but I find that my skin needs a little less nourishing cream/lotion than usual. fragrance notes: the body shop love etc. eau de parfum

I was ready to pass off The Body Shop's Love Etc. as just another flaky, fruity/floral girly scent. (Chalk it up to the tween-esque, heart-covered box). But when I found out the fragrance was created by none other than Dominique Ropion, the renowned perfumer behind Givenchy Very Irresistible, Burberry the Beat, and a roster of fragrances for Frederic Malle, I knew I was in for something special. And it is. Call me addicted, if you will. This perfume is a bit deceiving because you might think that, being called "Love" it would be rom-com-ish and a bit boring, like a bouquet of carnations for Valentine's Day. But Love Etc. is more like a bouquet of orchids, as it's pretty yet sexy, feminine yet sophisticated and sparkling but warm. The main notes of the scent are jasmine and vanilla, an ingredient which is actually also derived from a flower, the vanilla orchid. On their own, these notes can be heady at times and too sweet at others, but Love Etc. also combines pear, neroli and bergamot at the top, heliotrope, lily of the valley in the middle, and creamy musk and sandalwood at the base, creating a beautifully sensuous mix. Love Etc. is uplifting and it just puts me in a good mood when I wear it. And the bottle? It's simply feminine and pretty with a chic gold cap. I also adore the Love Etc. Body Lotion, an intensely moisturizing, and very fragrant way to experience Love Etc. Layering it with the Eau de Parfum gives the scent immense staying power, too. What's more, this scent is the first ever to use community-traded alcohol based on organically-grown sugar cane from Ecuador. Just another reason to love this scent.

natureshock: green beaver "for my sister" natural deodorant

Have you been caught by the pink wave? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and you've probably noticed the onslaught of "pink" products, all in the name of supporting breast cancer awareness (BCA). It's definitely a worthy cause, and one I can totally get behind, but it seems a lot of these products reserve such a small amount of the proceeds to the cause, or are such unlikely product tie-ins, that it comes off as a bit self-serving and blatantly consumerist, leading to the phenomenon of "pinkwashing" (read more about it over at A Girl's Gotta Spa and BellaSugar who wrote interesting posts on the subject.) Some say that any awareness for the cause, however unlikely, is a win for BCA, but I'm a bit skeptical. Who could forget the pink Dyson Vacuum Cleaner?
But thankfully, there's also plenty of brands that are truly passionate about fighting breast cancer, and Canadian natural beauty brand Green Beaver is one of them. For Green Beaver co-founder Alain Menard, the fight became personal when his sister Michèlle Ménard, a 32-year-old mother of three, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She's been battling the disease for seven years, and has survived a mastectomy as well as continued chemotherapy. Alain came up with the "For My Sister" all-natural deodorant, with – wait for it – 100% (!) of the profits going directly to research at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research and McGill University. The idea: using products with natural ingredients lessens the amount of potentially toxic chemicals that go into our bodies and into the ecosystem. It's all about prevention, folks.
While I was obviously touched by the personal story behind this product, I was still a little "meh" about using it, since most "natural" deodorants I've tried just didn't measure up to drugstore brands. But I'm happy to report that this aluminum-free deodorant with skin-soothing aloe and chamomile is also surprisingly effective and kept me dry and odor-free all day long. Lesson learned. It's also got a pleasant, citrus scent that's light enough so it doesn't overpower your perfume.

Marc Jacobs's Lola perfume bottle is like a little piece of sculpture, so it was only fitting that the brand would turn it into wearable art. Enter the Marc Jacobs Lola Solid Perfume Ring - the coolest cocktail bauble you ever did see. This little bit of gorgeousness landed in my inbox today, courtesy of Sephora, and though I'm not much of a jewelry wearer, I need this ring on my finger, STAT! fixation: korres lip butter

I haven't had a potted lip balm in my purse for years, mainly because I like the hands-free convenience and minimal mess factor of tube glosses. But I'm willing to make an exception for Korres Lip Butter in Quince, which is my new, heavy-rotation lip product. Pourquoi? Korres Lip Butter is a tinted balm that's the closest thing to the texture of real butter I think I've ever tried; it melts into lips with its moisturizing shea butter and rice wax-infused formula. And though the color looks rather shocking in the pot, when you put it on, it's the loveliest, most flattering petal-pink that seems to wake up your whole complexion (I kid you not). It's got a super-subtle, fruity scent, but it's made without synthetic fragrances and dyes (along with no parabens, sulfates and petrochemicals). And, packaging-wise, the vibrant fuchsia lid just makes me happy for some reason; it hints at the prettiness within, and does not disappoint.

Axe Body Spray is billed as the chick magnet for men (you've probably seen those creepy "Chocolate Man" ads where desperate, ravenous women chomp off said man's body parts). And now, there's a fragrance that's claiming to do the same for women – only this time, it's backed up by research. New from Harvey Prince, the company that brought us Ageless, the first anti-aging perfume, comes Eau Flirt, a fragrance billed as "the world’s first perfume clinically proven to make men flirt with women". Eau Flirt was inspired by a groundbreaking study that found men's passion is stirred not by typically sexy musky notes, but by a combination of pumpkin pie and lavender scents. As such, Eau Flirt incorporates those two main essences along with fruity top notes of black currant, plum, raspberry and apple, floral and spicy middle notes of jasmine, ylang, nutmeg and cinnamon (the classic aromas of pumpkin pie), and a drydown of musk and rare and precious woods.
Women have long used fragrance to woo the opposite sex, and while I'm not sure this one will ensnare hordes of potential suitors, as far-fetched as it may sound (the product sounds like it was created by the hilariously fantastical minds of the editors at The Onion), Eau Flirt definitely has me curious and actually sounds kind of yummy. When the study in question came out (conducted by the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation), I wondered when someone would dream up a scent that captured these aromas (imagining that women might slather themselves with pumpkin pie filling as a tool of seduction in the meantime).

Katie Cassidy's gone all Betty Draper on us. That is, the sex-kitten Betty Draper from the recent Italy episode of Mad Men, "Souvenir", where our (un)happy 1960s housewife did as the Romans do and dialled up her inner temptress with a towering, statement-making bouffant updo. Katie channelled Betty (minus the best accessory of all: the dashing Don Draper) at the recent Hollywood Life's Hollywood Style Awards, sporting this highly-coiffed, sky-high updo of her own, paired with a chic little pouffy-sleeved LBD (for a full-scale view of Katie's look, check out Red Carpet Fashion Awards). And while I kind of hated the over-the-top-ness of it at first (just as I disliked Betty's hair at first sight, since it was so out-of-character for her), now, the 'do is growing on me because it's so different than anything else we've seen on the red-carpet and I applaud Katie for taking a risk. Of course, we'd expect nothing less from Katie, also known as the new "Amanda" on Melrose Place. Love that she kept the makeup minimal, save for a whisper of '60s-esque winged black eyeliner, to round out the look.

face of the day: collette dinnigan spring 2010 ready-to-wear

What with all the heavyweight designers and their outlandish beauty looks presented in Paris this week, such as Marc Jacobs for Vuitton (those 'fros!) and John Galliano (those mime lips!) it was pretty tough to stand out from the pack. But designer Collette Dinnigan delivered us from wackiness with this simply stellar and surprisingly wearable look. While I've been loving all the statement lips we've been seeing on the spring 2010 runways, it was refreshing to see some color again on the the eyes. Here, the eyes are done up in a forest-y green shade, which might seem a little dark for a spring look (and more in line with fall/winter shades), but it simply proves that the "seasonal color" rule was made to be broken. Plus, the green has a bit of brightness to it, which makes it feel fresh and new, and yes, spring-like. The rest of the face is otherwise kept soft, with neutral, browny-peach blush and a peachy-nude lip – almost a perfect match to the neutral shade worn at the recent Chanel show, which, as Beauty Editor pointed out, is almost a dead ringer for MAC's famed Twig lipstick. Love the hair too: slicked into a side chignon, it looks fresh and modern and a little romantic. And behold the brows! This girl obviously has great eyebrows to begin with, but they've been played up with some brown shadow to deepen their presence, which frames the entire look beautifully.

fragrance notes: guerlain idylle

As much as I try to fight it, I'm pretty much a classic floral perfume girl at heart. The scent of roses and jasmine are some of the prettiest scents on earth for me, hence, my obsession with Stella McCartney's range of scents that riff on various rose notes. So why do I fight it? Well, let's face it, florals can seem boring and feel a little grandmother-y. But Guerlain's new scent, Idylle, created by its new-ish in-house perfumer Thierry Wasser, is a modern take on floral that's far from boring. Described as a "love dream", Idylle is an intensely romantic and pretty fragrance that kind of feels like you're walking through the most amazing flower garden packed with blooming roses, lilac and jasmine. It opens up with Bulgarian rose, raspberry, lychee and freesia, giving it a fruitiness at the top that's not at all cloying. Then, at the heart, the scent opens up to all those lovely florals: rose, peony, jasmine, lilac and lily-of-the-valley. Idylle finishes with the slightly woody white musk and patchouli at the bottom. While Idylle is described as a chypre floral, the musk and patchouli notes are so subtle you almost don't even notice them, which I kind of like. They're still there, and they give the fragrance structure, but they keep quiet so as to enhance the blooming freshness of the juice. My one qualm with Idylle is that, like all things precious and fleeting, the scent just doesn't last as long as I want it to; after spraying it on in the morning, it seems to be gone before lunch. Which kind of makes me love it more, in a way - you always want the one that got away, so to speak. And of course, let's not forget the stunning bottle - created by French designer Ora Ito, it's shaped like a glimmering, golden raindrop that's like a piece of sculpture in itself.

What's not to love about the romantic and perfectly undone beauty look from Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel show? With their updos all tousled and a bit askew, and their hair strewn with foliage-themed combs and barettes (not to mention the flora and fauna-esque jewelry draped around their necks), the girls looked a little like dreamy wood nymphs from a JRR Tolkien novel. A perfect reference for a spring runway show, don't you think? Love the face-framing tendrils of hair falling ever so randomly.
The makeup, meanwhile, was soft and pretty, featuring super-subtle peachy-pink lips, barely-there blush and neutral eyes with glimmers of copper. It had kind of a monochrome effect - a study in neutrals, befitting a nature girl. And of course, a canvas of perfect porcelain skin a la Miss Cate Blanchett. The look was such a hit that some of the models were actually, dare I say it, smiling during the show. Well done, Karl.

Thought you'd seen it all when it comes to mascara? Me too, until I spied this little number from Canadian beauty company Belvada. No, it doesn't vibrate, oscillate or spin, but what it does do is an entirely novel approach to applying mascara. Belvada Mascara is an all-in-one product that is entirely housed in one applicator, so there's no separate tube and wand to pump and fiddle with. You just flick up the switch on the side, and out comes the brush, fully coated – (while any excess is removed as it slides out) – with enough inky black product to cover both sets of eyelashes. Hence, its "one-handed application" moniker - it is, essentially, a super streamlined mascara. And the resulting fringe post-application is also something to behold: precise separation with little to no clumping and lashes that still look voluminous and full.

The hair embellishments at the spring runway shows are just slaying me. It's like every designer/hairstylist at each new show is trying to top the last. We've seen ribbons, tulle, hair extensions, hair dye, all manner of braids, and now, at the Yves Saint Laurent show, stylist extraordinaire Julien d'Ys has elevated the trusty Goody hairband to high-fashion status, layering them on in multiples for a textured effect. Okay, I know this may not be the most wearable, everyday look – (and in fact, piling on those claw-grip plastic headbands by the dozen might make you look a little sinister and would no doubt bring on one hell of a headache!) – but the idea still offers up a bit of whimsical inspiration – who would have thought of layering those things? Off the runway, you can still channel the mastery of d'Ys and get a similarly chic effect by slipping on two or three headbands. One caveat: Skip the spidery, mime-like eyelashes.

Remember my post about dirty hair being the next big beauty trend? Just to recap: I suggested that second-day, almost greasy hair as worn by Miss Alexa Chung, is now de rigueur in fashion circles. And now, we're seeing it on the runway, with the models at Karl Lagerfeld's recent spring show sporting less-than-perfectly coiffed, slightly pompadour-ish updos. So it's not "dirty" per se, but the hair has definitely been loaded with product and/or dry shampoo to give it that second-or-third-day-after-washing vibe. And to me, it's much more interesting than precisely styled hair anyway.
Another trend: all that cool stuff going on in the back of the hair, something we've been seeing at many of the spring runway shows. The roughed-up texture adds interest, where this might have been just your run-of-the-mill bun. I was also rather captivated by the somewhat angelic, pretty makeup: flawless skin, white eyeshadow and uber-precise black eyeliner (which felt very French-girl chic), flushed pink cheeks, and rosy pink lipstick dabbed on to the lips. It was a nice contrast to the masculine structure of Karl's clothes. Mais oui!

Sporting some high-glam makeup looks, the models at the Christian Dior show in Paris yesterday reminded me not only of silver-screen sirens of the 40s and 50s, but also of one iconic figure of 1980s film: one Isabella Rossellini from David Lynch's magnum opus of weird, Blue Velvet. As torch-singer Dorothy Vallens, Rossellini rocked baby blue eyeshadow and precise red lipstick, along with her glorious signature blue velvet gowns. (If you've never seen this neo-noir cult classic, I highly recommend it, if only to catch Dennis Hopper's delightfully disturbing turn as sexually-depraved, inhalant-huffing Frank Booth. Warning: Not for the faint of heart.)

But back to Dior: While the makeup at John Galliano's ready-to-wear shows is often more toned-down than some of the more outlandish looks in his couture outings, this one still made a dramatic statement, with a focus on strong, high-arched brows, and of course, that can't-miss-it blue eyeshadow/red lipstick combo. Once known as one of the tackiest makeup pairings imaginable, it is no longer verboten and has become almost acceptable in our modern makeup vernacular (though I'm still not sure I'd personally wear it, I have to admit it looks totally gorge). Meanwhile, the models' smooth and shiny cascading waves of hair was pure 40s and evoked a Veronica Lake vibe. Simply stunning.

Forgive me for posting this gratuitous shot of supermodel Daria Werbowy. I say gratuitous because there wasn't really anything all that remarkable about her beauty look at the Balmain show yesterday; the spotlight was on the model's perfectly angular features and naturally gorgeous skin. But amidst a sea of crazytown beauty looks at some of the various shows in Paris yesterday (at Balenciaga and Rick Owens included), this barely-there look actually stood out. It may look like Daria just got out of bed and was untouched by a makeup artist, but I have a hunch the grooming went something like this: groomed brows, a pinch of concealer underneath the eyes, maybe a hint of blush for contouring the cheekbones and a swipe of bronzer at the temples, and some dabs of Vaseline (and/or white shimmer shadow) around the tear ducts of the eyes to make them pop. Other than that, it's all about the face. And oh, what a face she has. Daria's back y'all!

face of the day: rochas spring 2010 ready-to-wear

Paris Fashion Week kicked off yesterday and even though I'm (sadly) not there, I'm going to pore over the previous day's best beauty looks and bring you my favorite pick each day. First up: Rochas, who showcased a sort of nerdgirl-expat-on-vacay kind of chic (think: socks with sandals and funky cat-eye glasses). There was nothing all that earth-shattering about the fairly natural beauty look; that is, until you looked closer and noticed these quirky-cool two-tone lips.

It was kind of like an ombré effect, with two slightly different shades of pink on top and bottom lips - a deeper, coral pink on the top lip and a softer petal pink on the bottom. According to WWD, makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath used a lipstick up top and a gloss on the bottom, creating a simultaneous contrast in textures. It may not be an everyday lip look, but you have to appreciate the artistry and little touches that come through. And can we talk about the hair for a second? Gathered in a low and loose, 20s-inspired windswept updo, the back was embellished with all manner of braids and knots that looked entirely complex and laissez-faire all at once. It was so maze-like, you could almost get lost in there!

With all things vampire being all the rage these days, I was sold on Urban Decay's new Ink for Eyes for its wickedly chic packaging alone: a long, sleek case embellished with a hand-drawn swirly peacock pattern that's a dead ringer (no pun intended) for a miniature coffin. But Ink for Eyes isn't just an ironically cool package; it's also a pretty fantastic cream eyeliner too. Not only are the array of colors gorgeous (think: aubergine, electric blue and hunter green), Ink for Eyes boasts a secret ingredient called Nylon 12, a high-tech polymer that allows the liner to glide on easily without skipping or dragging skin with it. Ink for Eyes also has the added benefit of absorbing excess oil, so the liner stays put all day long. beauty icon: sweet valley high

When I was growing up, I had an unlikely role model(s): The Sweet Valley High twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield. Why unlikely? Because yours truly was no sun-streaked, blonde-haired/blue-eyed all American; as a brown-haired/brown-eyed kid with a larger-than-average nose, I was far from the perfect beauty ideal. But that didn't stop me from marvelling at Jessica and Elizabeth's sea-green eyes and bouncy blonde locks on the covers of those Harlequin-esque pre-teen romance novels. And many of my fellow female grade fivers were all on-board too.

Though I identified more with bookish good-girl Elizabeth, with her half-up/half-down hair and more conservative approach to beauty, I secretly wanted to be the vixen-ish wildchild Jessica, who wore her silky locks loose and went all out with her makeup. (By the way, is that Nars Orgasm blush she's wearing?) But those cheesy illustrations on the covers of the novels made the twins seem real and not real at the same time; we knew the Wakefields were an unattainable fantasy, even though we still dreamed of being like them. Even so, the news that Diablo Cody is set to produce and direct a film adaptation of Sweet Valley High has got me all nostalgic and I can't wait to see who Diablo chooses to play the villainous Jessica with the hottie boyfriend Bruce Patman.

face of the day: dolce and gabbana spring 2010 ready-to-wear

I only had to see one close-up image from Dolce and Gabbana show (held yesterday in Milan) to know that it would be, hands-down, my favorite beauty look from all the shows we've seen so far. Why? Not only is it totally pretty, it's also very wearable. A little bit boho-gypsy, with dashes of windblown Sicilian country-girl-meets-femme fatale thrown in for good measure, this look is about achieving the perfectly imperfect. (Scowl optional. Natasha Poly, please turn that frown upside-down).

With all the beautiful adornments in the hair (check out that back view, will you? Is it not GORGE?), it may look complex, but in reality, it's anything but: Just pull back tousled, bedhead-y hair into a no-fuss updo and add a bunch of gorgeous barrettes and clips, and you're good to go. And the makeup may look "done", but it couldn't be simpler: dab on a rosy-red lipstain or lipstick and rim your eyes in shimmery white shadow or liner to make them catch the light (of course, it helps if you have model-perfect skin to begin with; if not, fake it by applying a medium-coverage foundation first).
And boho-grunge lovers take note: Dolce and Gabbana even brought back those goth-y velvet chokers we used to wear back in the early 90's. I'm sensing a trend coming on...

face of the day: roberto cavalli spring 2010 ready-to-wear

It was a big day in Milan yesterday, as heavyweight designers such as Gucci, Pucci and Bottega Veneta showed their spring collections. But all seemed to be quiet on the beauty front, with many designers favoring minimal, almost makeup-free looks (the exception being Bottega Veneta, where models sported gorgeous, statement fuchsia lips). But you can always rely on Roberto Cavalli to bring it in some capacity; while we might usually expect full-on, bombshell glam, this time out, he took it down a few notches, instead showcasing a more subtle, slightly intellectual approach to beauty. The result was no less fierce, as this shot of the stunning Chanel Iman proves.

The look was all about a gorgeously sculpted face, with cheekbones highlighted through strategic contouring and the eyes extended with exaggerated black winged eyeliner. And then there was the hair: given a slick, wet-look in front, the back was finished with an impossibly tight, long braid. It could have felt a bit Little House on the Prairie, but combined with the high-shine texture of the hair and ferocious makeup, this was no Laura Ingalls country-girl.
As we saw at Alexander Wang, bold braids seem to be the thing for the coming season. Will you wear them?

You might think that purple is a color synonymous only with the cool and crisp temperatures of fall – and there's no doubt that it's the color of the season when it comes to fashion and beauty (and my personal favorite color). But a couple of designers in New York and Milan, namely Michael Kors and Versace, have reclaimed the moody hue, with a lighter touch, for spring. In New York at Kors, models sported aubergine and lilac eyeshadow, and here at Versace, eyes were shaded in matte violet. Veering to the more subtle end of the color spectrum, the soft wash of shadow on the upper and lower eyelids was immensely flattering. And paired with nude lips, the effect was soft and fresh, rather than bright and bold. Love the bouncy, tousled, Gisele-like hair, too.

back to black: mac volcanic ash exfoliator

MAC isn't really best known for its skincare, but their MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator has been causing quite the stir in the beauty blogosphere. Ever since it launched as part of the Future Earth collection last year, it's gotten rave reviews by the likes of Spoiled Pretty, Makeup and Beauty Blog and Amber at Beauty Blogging Junkie (who deems it her "favorite scrub of all time"). But like a brewing volcano, it erupted and then faded to black, as MAC Volcanic Ash disappeared, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Now, the sensible folk at MAC have brought it back as part of the Style Black collection, and luckily for me, I've finally had the chance to try it. First, let it be known that MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is not the prettiest product to look at, especially when you apply it to your face – it looks like globby black goo (read: Fright Night revisited.) But the formula's fine sugar crystals and volcanic ash harvested from the islands of Vanuatu are expert skin-smoothers. For the face, a little goes a long way (you only need a little dollop) and skin feels clean, soft and radiant afterwards. Love that you can also use it anywhere your body needs a little buffing - ashy skin becomes a distant memory.

lip service: vasanti cosmetics tinted lip balm

For me, tinted lip balm is my no-brainer, easiest-to-apply, go-to lip product. So when I find a good one, I hang onto it for dear life (lest it become lost in the depths of my abyss-like handbag). And my new favorite is this one by Canadian brand Vasanti Cosmetics. Originally launched by a trio of South Asian ladies with cosmetics that catered to darker skin tones, Vasanti recently relaunched its line with products perfect for all women, and all skin tones. Color me impressed. The Tinted Lip Balm looks like a lipstick (complete with chic, silver-bullet packaging), but is, in fact, a wonderfully nourishing lip conditioner that brings just a whisper of color and shine to your lips. Packed with shea and mango butter, meadowfoam seed oil and olive and sunflower oil, these balms deliver a soft and smooth texture with a hint of a fruity-fresh scent. My fave color: Bahamas, a natural, works-on-everyone, plummy brown.

At last night's Emmy Awards, Padma Lakshmi must have taken beauty inspiration from the recent runway shows in New York. Sporting a goddess-y crown of braids atop her head, the look was reminiscent of the embellished milkmaid braids seen at Oscar de la Renta that I blogged about last week. While this look may not be to everyone's taste, for me, the hair was a refreshing change from all the tousled updos seen on the red carpet. Paired with minimal, neutral makeup, Padma's hair stole the show – (unless, of course, you were distracted by the twins) – and the stunning Top Chef host definitely stood out in her magenta gown.

On the last day of New York Fashion Week, L'Wren Scott, the towering former model, designer, and girlfriend to Mick Jagger, showcased this Marie Antoinette-meets-Amy Winehouse look at her spring show. A sky-high bouffant updo with an 80s-inspired crimped texture thrown in for good measure was a study in contrasts, pairing an edgy, modern vibe with Louis XVI-era chic. Accompanied with a semi-pale and powdered face, subtly rosy cheeks and bold cerise lips, the look evoked modern-day princess. According to the Lancôme Blog, the makeup was all about layering product in a light and subtle way. A glimpse at the nails also reveals that dark, plummy nails will be with us at least until next spring.
Yes, this look is a little out there, and I'm not sure if I'd personally wear it, but I kind of love it.

As we bid adieu to beloved beauty brand Prescriptives – (it's true - Estee Lauder Cos. announced today that it's shuttering the 30-year-old brand; it will continue to be sold on Prescriptives.com until supplies last) – let's celebrate one Lauder brand that is alive and well: Clinique, which has further satisfied my beauty needs with its new Superbalanced Powder Makeup. Let it be known that I'm not much of a mineral foundation fan, but this one has potentially made me a convert. Since I've been wearing it for the last few days, my skin has looked better and more glowy than usual, to which I can only attribute to the foundation's vitamin-infused mineral formula. Who knew milkmaid braids could look so chic? I've always loved Sienna Miller's take on them, but the Oscar de la Renta show made we love them even more. At de la Renta's spring show yesterday, the models sported these pretty crown-like braids made of hair extensions interwoven with colorful fabric. Another sign that hair embellishment is the big trend to watch, this look was a little similar to the one we saw earlier in the week at Zac Posen, where models wore updos interspersed with neon hair extensions. Admittedly, this hair isn't for everyone, but for a special occasion such as a wedding, it would be stunning. As far as makeup, while lips took the spotlight at most other shows this week in New York, the eyes were the focus at Oscar. Extended black cat's-eye liner on an otherwise mostly bare face was simply glam. Gorgeous.

lash out: clarins wonder perfect mascara

Usually mascaras fall into two camps: those that stretch and lengthen, and those that pump up the volume. But Clarins, with its new Wonder Perfect Mascara, is claiming to do both and more: a 3-in-1 super mascara that fattens, curls and lengthens, all in one tube (hence, it's "Wonder Perfect" moniker). So, yes, a pretty bold claim to make and one that probably breeds skepticism in the minds of beauty-lovers. But let it be known that if there is such a thing as a perfect mascara, then Clarins Wonder Perfect comes pretty darn close. My big test with mascara is how doe-eyed my eyes look post-application, and this delivers that look in spades. Natural plant waxes thicken with minimal clumping, while a sugar-cane-infused "lash conditioner" works to shape and curl lashes into a Bambi-worthy fringe. And the brush is just as I like it: not too long, and not too fat, with a good grip and just the right spacing between the bristles so you can get to those hard-to-reach areas. All this, plus a chic silver tube. I don't think I could ask for more.

rodarte gets inked for spring

One of the coolest things about the Rodarte spring runway show yesterday was the tribal-warrior-style body art. Rarely seen on the runway, the girls sported Maori-inspired tattoos created by none other than MAC. Senior Artist Chantel Miller designed the graphic tattoo makeup, and worked closely with Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy and MAC makeup artist James Kaliardos over 4 weeks to create the full-sleeve, half-sleeve and neck tattoo designs. “The idea for the tattoos stemmed from Kate and Laura’s desire to celebrate makeup as art not only for the face, but also for the body in a similar way that Indian culture uses henna. They want women to look at makeup as an accessory for an outfit the way you would a bracelet or a necklace,” said Chantel Miller. It took four hours for Miller and her team of 40 artists to hand paint the elaborate body art, using the following MAC products: PRO Micronized Airbrush in Black Black, Brush 252, Brush 242, PRO Mixing Medium/Alcohol Base, Liquidlast Liner in Point Black. Each model received a customized combination of designs, depending on which look they were wearing in the show. The inked designs were a perfect match for the sisters's darkly apocalyptic, Mad Max-esque clothing. In a word: Fierce.

face of the day: marc by marc jacobs spring 2010 ready-to-wear

The Marc by Marc Jacobs runway show proved two things: that come spring, you must embellish your hair in any way possible, and that the statement lip is here to stay. While I don't recommend tying one on á la this best-in-show-dog ribbon meets Blair Waldorf-on-acid hair bow - (which, according to Glamour's Beauty Girls, was inspired by the Material Girl) - more subtle pins, extensions, clips or ribbons placed just-so can add interest and really make your look. And perhaps the biggest trend for spring 2010 is a bright or dark lip on a mostly bare face (seen thus far at Vena Cava, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs and Rodarte, to name a few). Here, an eye-popping bright, matte fuchsia brings a hit of color to the face, so little other makeup is needed, save for a hint of bone eyeshadow and a flick of mascara. While many designers veered to the dark side (at Rodarte, it was a black-meets-maroon lip shade), I'm loving this pop of pink, which inevitably just says spring (even though we haven't even barely gotten into fall).

face of the day: zac posen spring 2010 ready-to-wear

The big runway show yesterday in New York was Marc Jacobs, which brought out the likes of Madonna and boytoy Jesus, Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton. It was the place to be for fashion, but beauty-wise, I just wasn't feeling the severe-looking, kabuki-esque white faces and exaggerated, high-arch brows (or maybe it was just the models's mean faces). Zac Posen, meanwhile, brought the pretty – the models looked fresh and finally, spring-like (these are spring shows, after all).

With flushed pink cheeks, a bit of shimmery white eyeshadow on the top and bottom lids, subtle petal-pink lips, and slicked-back updos, the girls looked like ballerinas post-plié session (and check out the back of the hair, in which dayglo-bright extensions were threaded through the models's real hair). This makeup look is totally wearable for everyday and brings out the natural beauty in anyone's features. It just goes to show that runway looks needn't be totally unattainable.

face of the day: derek lam spring 2010 ready-to-wear

While a sea of dark makeup colors seemed to evoke an anti-spring attitude at many runway shows at New York Fashion Week, it was beginning to look a lot more like spring at Derek Lam, where models sported pastel, candy-floss-like shades. Indeed, Nars lead artist Tom Pecheux name-checked Coney Island and Asbury Park as inspirations for the rainbow of pretty colors he washed over eyelids and cheeks. Giving the look a tribal 80s twist, Pecheux drew lines of eyeshadow straight across the lids. "I love when the multiple colors are drawn straight across and outward for a very tribal effect," said Pecheux. "I used the new Easy Lover lip gloss on just the outline of the lips to have the girls appear doll-like."

To recreate the look, try these products and tips:

Face:
- Blend NARS Sheer Glow Foundation with a foundation brush into skin and set with NARS Loose Powder
- Buff skin with NARS Kabuki Artisan Boton Brush for a porcelain doll effect

Eyes:
- Using the emerald side of NARS Misfit Duo Eyeshadow and NARS Eye Shader brush, drag the shadow along the lower lash line straight across until just past the outer corner
- Dust the violet side of NARS Jolie Poupee Duo Eyeshadow on the eyelids; use the darker side in the crease and fade into the temple joining the emerald green from Misfit
- Highlight the inner corners of the eyes with NARS Bains Douche Glitter Pencil (NEW for Spring 2010), making the connection between the purple and green
After curling lashes with NARS Eyelash Curler, apply three coats of NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara on the top and bottom lashes
- Dust the burnt orange side of NARS Mediteranee Duo Eyeshadow along the brow bone.

Lips:
- Fill in the lips lightly with NARS Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, dotting the lips with your fingers to blend it in.
- Outline the lips with NARS Easy Lover Lip Gloss (NEW for Spring 2010) to create a plush-looking, glassy pout.

Cheeks:
- Apply NARS Nico Blush to give a subtle hint of highlighting
- Dust Desire Blush in round, circular movements onto the apples of the cheeks
- Finish with NARS Taj Mahal Blush, blending it in with the pink cheeks and up towards the temples.

face of the day: alexander wang spring 2010 ready-to-wear

Why the long face? Well, it's no surprise that a scowl is a required accessory for models at most every runway show, but it's an absolute necessity at Alexander Wang - a designer synonymous with cool-girl, just-rolled-out-of-bed, laissez-faire chic. But let's get past the "I so don't want to be here" expression for a second and focus on the hair, shall we? I'm in love with this uber-long, sideswept fishtail braid, which pairs contrasting textures of roughed-up on the top and neatly plaited on the bottom. Unlike some of the hair looks we've seen on the runways of New York so far, this hair looks far from "done" and feels appropriately slept-in, as though our girl was up partying all night long with Erin Wasson, Alexa Chung, Chloe Sevigny and the other It-girl set. Which might explain why she looks like she could use a few more hours of sleep. Minimal makeup, beyond a matte baby pink lip, completes the look.

Call it "fantasy hair": the look for locks at Jason Wu's runway show was all about intricate updos festooned with waves of black tulle and gorgeous, ladylike headpieces. In a perfect world, this would be my everyday hair look (if I were living the charmed life of say, Dita Von Teese). The coils and swirls in the models' hair were a fitting echo for the frilly touches of Wu's pretty dresses (that have been recently favored by the First Lady Michelle Obama, herself). Meanwhile, lips continued to take centre-stage on a flawless yet pared-down face – here, with a deep red-meets-raisin hue that bridged the true reds and deep aubergine/almost black looks seen on the other girls. This is obviously a more special-occasion look, but you can channel it for the real world by slipping a pretty clip into your hair (there are plenty of great ones on the market, since hair embellishment is oh-so on trend right now). Finish with your most flattering red lip, and you're good to go.

face of the day: vena cava spring 2010 ready-to-wear

If the recent Vena Cava runway show was any indication, the bold-faced eighties trend is going to be with us well into next spring. Models sported statement matte lilac lips against an otherwise seemingly bare complexion (read: the face isn't actually bare, but more of a flawless, matte finish, which requires a lot of prep work). Brows, meanwhile, were wild and untamed, in keeping with the Brooke Shields-ish look we've been seeing the past few seasons. And witness the wet, Robert Palmer-girl-esque slicked-back hair - yet another 80s-revival trend designers just can't seem to shake. As for the purple lips? They're tough to pull off beyond the runway, so lighten up your color and go for a much more face-flattering mauve shade.

Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion is one of those legendary products coveted by beauty addicts across the land. So when I heard that Urban Decay launched a version for the rest of the face, I knew I was in for a winner. Its new Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion is, in short, like flawless skin in a bottle. Smooth it on, and pores and fine lines vanish, giving skin an airbrushed feel. I love the matte finish it gives to my skin; I can almost forgo finishing powder, because it's that good at keeping oil at bay. And budget-savvy girls, take note: all you need is a pea-sized drop of the stuff for your whole face. So even though this stuff will probably last me for eons, I wouldn't rule out pulling a MacGyver and taking a knife to the bottle once I reach the end to make this Potion last just that little bit longer.

Who doesn't love a good makeover story, especially when models are involved? Model Irina Lazareanu is gearing up for fall (and prepping for Fashion Week) by chopping off her trademark long locks and donning a new mod-inspired 'do. While Irina's always had a sort of 60s-bohemian look about her (and a keen resemblance to model Penelope Tree), she's now channeling the space-age mod vibe of iconic 60s model Peggy Moffitt, whose bowl cut was known as the "five point." I was unsure about Irina's severe new look at first, but now I kind of love it; it suits her round face perfectly.

The more I learn about makeup tricks and techniques, the more enamored I become with the tools used to create the latest beauty looks. So when I went to a Sephora event recently, I immediately gravitated towards their brushes – and they make some fine ones, let me tell you. One item I became fixated upon was a simple five-piece brush set that contained a genius find for eyeliner fiends: an angled eyeliner brush. While most eyeliner brushes run the straight and narrow, this bendy little number has impressive reach and allows you to apply your cream liner straight-on, so you don't have to awkwardly maneuver your brush from the top or from the side of your eyes. It gives an impeccably precise line which you can easily layer according to your preferred thickness. While the one I spied hasn't launched yet, as it's part of their holiday offerings, Sephora currently offers a similar one from its Professionnel line – the Sephora Brand Professionnel Platinum Angled Eyeliner Brush. Definitely a must-have for easy, foolproof cream eyeliner application.

Whoever is doing Rachel McAdams's makeup (and hair, too) deserves an award of merit; she never looks anything less than chic, but always with an edgy twist. At the recent premiere of the The Time Traveler's Wife at the Deauville Film Festival, Rachel sported what looks to be, a first glance, just another red lip of the Dita Von Teese variety. But upon closer inspection, you'll see it's actually verging on bright-pink fuchsia – a classic look imbued with a hint of modern trend. And her loose yet voluminous updo is so on-point with current trends from the fall runways (where hair has scaled new heights).

Giorgio Armani is a man after my own heart when it comes to fragrances. Back in May, he told Women's Wear Daily that he could do without the so-called "elevator" fragrances that have become popular in North America: “American women like a certain kind of fragrance, stronger and very personal,” he observed. “I sometimes say it’s a little bit like an elevator fragrance. When a woman gets onto an elevator, you can smell this fragrance. It’s a bit too much.” Here, here, Giorgio. And he's looking to take things down a notch with the new fragrance for women, Idole d'Armani, described as an ode to femininity and to the women who have inspired him. Yes, I'm sure we've heard before that notion of "capturing the many facets of a woman" through fragrance, but this scent actually delivers on that promise. Idole d'Armani is a sparkling and sophisticated floral married with a bit of spice and citrus for good measure. It opens with joyous and bright orange, pear and ginger and then blossoms into pretty rose and jasmine notes blended with unexpected and mysterious saffron, and finishes with a warm patchouli and vetiver base. In short, it's all of my favorite fragrance notes rolled into one bottle, and the symphony of notes is miraculous. Idole d'Armani is the kind of fragrance that you can't really overdo (unless, of course, you bathe in it) - and the kind that only you the wearer (or someone close to you) will be able to sniff. Unsuspecting passersby won't be bowled over by your perfume, and that's a good thing.

shakira channels eyes wide shut for vanity fair

Remember that intricate, lacy eye mask from the Valentino couture show I waxed rhapsodic about a couple of months back? Well, it's resurfaced – adorning the face of a glammed-up Shakira, no less (flanked by the ubiquitous fawning man-candy), in the pages of the latest Vanity Fair. While the one I spotlighted previously was a one-eyed wonder, this one is a full-on, masquerade-style Eyes Wide Shut full-face number that scales new heights, giving it a vague resemblance to those bunny ears that Madonna's been seen sporting. Which got me thinking: could eye masks be the new bunny ears?

this just in: twilight beauty site launches

Twihards take note: the Twilight Beauty site is now live, offering vamp-themed makeup to tide you over until the release of New Moon in November. At first, I was highly skeptical of this seemingly transparent marketing shill (truth be told, although I liked the first film, I'm not among the Twilight-obsessed), but after checking out the products online, I have to admit they look kind of cool, if only for the slick packaging. Twilight Beauty offers two collections: the soft and romantic Luna, with shades of softly shimmering rose, that evokes Bella and Edward's undying love (a stretch, I know); and Volturi, a harder-edged selection of dark and bright hues that represents the Volturi vampire coven in the films. Luna is definitely the more wearable of the two, but I'm loving the packaging of Volturi (shown here) the best, with its goth-inspired crests and graphic edge. All told though, I have to wonder why there was a need for two collections within the line, since there's some overlap going on - both Luna and Volturi have a body shimmer, for example, and they seem to be basically the same product. I'm not sure I'll buy anything from this line, but I have to give the marketing people behind it props for such an inspired creation. Behold this description of the Volturi Immortal Body Shimmer: "Transform your skin with this hydrating body shimmer that leaves you looking and feeling immortally stunning."

Leave it to the Lipstick Queen herself, Poppy King (let's just call her a lip color obsessive) to create what might just be the best thing to ever happen to lipgloss. Her new Chinatown Glossy Pencils are no run-of-the-mill glosses – they're like big, jumbo Crayola crayons for lips that you trace on and fill in to deliver smooth, moisturizing, shiny color. And while the colors here may look almost freakishly clownish, the Glossy Pencils go on super-sheer, while still giving a pop of bright pigment (kind of like a tinted balm, but with more oomph).

Inspired by one of Poppy's favorite films, Roman Polanski's neo-noir Chinatown (featuring Faye Dunaway in an array of fetching lipcolors), the Pencils have noir-ish names like Thriller, Crime and Mystery. My fave is Thriller (second from the top), a sheer scarlet red, perfect for the femme fatale. But because they're so much fun to use, and so cool-looking (packaging included, which comes in a foreboding, noir-themed box) I kind of want them all.

In my line of work, my eyes are invariably glued to a computer screen for hours on end. The marathon squinting sessions that ensue as a result of less-than-20/20 vision makes for one strained set of orbital bones, let me tell you. But relief is at-hand now that I've found Sampar's Eye Rule. It's a genius pen with a roll-on steel ball that delivers not only a glorious cooling sensation, but also dispenses a delicious dose of anti-aging and antioxidant goodness, in the way of peptides and argan oil. It's hard to believe that September is upon us – next week, in fact. But apparently beauty brand Shu Uemura didn't get the memo, as they've given us another (welcome) dollop of summer with the electric, day-glo colors in their fall collection, Primitribe. The star of the collection for me (aside from the gorgeous, native-art-inspired packaging) is the Painting Liner in Turquoise. This creamy liner is so easy to use – just dip a liner brush in the pigment like a true artiste and start tracing. Painting Liner is almost foolproof and goes on like a dream, without any "skin-drag" or smudging whatsoever. Plus, it's the absolute most-long-wearing liner I've ever tried; in fact, I had a hard time getting the stuff off my lids. When Erika over at Makeup Bag said it was long-lasting, she wasn't kidding! I'll wear a thin line of color on the top lids, or quickly smooth it out (since it dries fast), for a more sheer shadowy look. Yes, Diane Kruger is still tops in my beauty books, but Katie is steadily gaining ground, for her stellar makeup and hair choices on the red carpet. Yesterday, at the Nylon magazine TV Issue Launch Party in West Hollywood, Katie rocked a loose, tousled updo worthy of Charlize Theron, along with on-trend pink lips, subtle lilac eyeshadow and 80s-inspired purple eyeliner only on the bottom lids. Major lashes, glowy skin (courtesy of strategically placed highlighter), and rosy-pink cheeks rounded out the look.

It's the little details in how a fragrance is presented – the way it's bottled, delivered, and ultimately spritzed on – that have a big impact on how I'll experience a scent. And luxury Italian fashion brand Prada misses nothing with the exquisite presentation of its new perfume, L'Eau Ambrée, the latest in its amber-based line of scents. With its vintage-y atomizer and steely-grey-to-black glass flaçon bedecked with touches of gold, you can't help but be transported to another time – a time when ladies languished in front of their boudoir mirrors and spritzed and powdered to their hearts' content. But lest you think that Prada's L'Eau Ambrée is an "old-lady" scent, think again: Just like the Prada brand of clothes, the perfume channels the archives of perfumery and melds it with the new, making it feel old and yet modern at the same time. A new take on traditional amber scents, L'Eau Ambrée is composed of top notes of Sicilian lemon, a heart of May rose and amber, and base notes of patchouli and vanilla. At first spritz comes a burst of a light, citrusy-green, which soon gives way to a retro-feeling powdery note that feels slightly granny, but fades as the scent dries on your skin. The rose note then comes alive, which feels florally yet sophisticated and light – a bit like plucked roses at the point just before they wither and dry out. The amber note gives warmth, and a woody feel, which stays with you as the patchouli and vanilla emerges, and neither note overpowers the other, creating the perfect balance of subtle floral, burnt embers and a slight creaminess. I love that L'Eau Ambrée is a subtle scent that, like Lancôme's Hypnôse Senses, doesn't shout its presence. All told, it's the perfect scent to layer under a cashmere sweater come fall. (Sorry - yes indeed, fall is coming.)

The big buzz on the beauty scene these days is larger-than-life lashes. Perhaps you're read about all those newfangled lash-enhancing, growth-stimulating serums and potions such as Latisse et al. that seek to make eyelashes go that extra mile? If you want some extra eyelash-oomph, but you're not into the Frankenstein-ian side effects of some of said products (reportedly Latisse can make lashes grow askew or in clumps), look no further than your trusty mascara, which seems to undergo new feats of technical wizardry just about every minute. Case in point: the famed Givenchy Phenomen'eyes Mascara, with the never-been-seen-before spherical mace-like wand, has now gone 2.0 with the new Givenchy Phenomen'eyes Effet Extension. A newly revamped formula, featuring something called stretch extension wax, is said to coat and lengthen each and every lash and dry on contact to deliver results akin to lash extensions. And yes, it delivers: my lashes soared to new heights after my first application of a couple of coats. The unique shape and small size of the brush allows you to really get in there at the root of lashes, to stretch them out and make them all spidery. While I haven't tried the original Phenomen'eyes Mascara (so can't give a compare/contrast rundown), I will say that this one is ideal for those that want lengthening power. So no need to play God with your lashes, dears. It's all in your magic wand: your mascara.

blinded by science: redken color extend shampoo and conditioner

I love how, in the beauty world, even something as seemingly mundane as shampoo can almost blind you with its science. Consider, if you will, Redken's Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner, which boasts such complex haircare technology, you'd think it was straight out of hair salons from the year 2050. Like the rest of North America, I've become rather smitten with Alexa Chung and her cool-girl style. But what is it, beyond the clothes, that lends her that laissez-faire chic vibe? I think I've figured it out: it's all in that unwashed, unruly hair. It's not dirty, per se, but definitely looks like second-day hair that wasn't overly styled or blow-dried into submission to begin with. And at the premiere of The September Issue yesterday, her locks looked, shall we say, almost greasy. This is a trend that's been brewing for a while among Brits like Kate Moss, and now with Alexa making daily red-carpet appearances on our side of the pond as host of MTV's It's On, we've gotten a steady dose of her unkempt locks. But I have to say, I kind of like this light-touch/low-maintenance approach to hair. It gives renewed hope to us fine-haired girls who sometimes have to skip a shampoo/blow-out day here and there.

Despite my unending obsession with beauty products, my laziness when it comes to grooming habits apparently knows no bounds. Case in point: I'll often take a pass on facial treatments, but have a soft spot for quick makeup remover wipes. So when I discover that a beauty product has a hidden time-saving component, as I did recently with Consonant Body Organic Foaming Face Wash, it's a time to rejoice. Yesterday, I was caught in a freak rain shower that brought to mind that scene from Magnolia when it rained frogs. Okay, it wasn't quite that apocalyptic, but the one lone rain cloud that broke free from the blazing sun and sputtered raindrops still prompted one befuddled man on the street to ask: "I'm not crazy – it's raining, right?" The shower – small and isolated, though it was – was a welcome bit of refreshment on a brutally scorching and almost unbearably humid day. So, in an attempt to recreate that fleeting moment of bliss and foster dreams of cooling-off seaside while at my desk, I'm reaching for Shu Uemura's Rose Depsea Water Facial Mist. This isn't just any old water: Infused with Shu Uemura's signature Depsea water, which is harvested from the ocean at a depth of 200 meters (where the sun can't touch it), the Facial Mist hydrates and revitalizes skin like no other. The video came out nearly 20 years ago (back in 1991), which is hard to believe, because if you look at her now, you'd think she hadn't aged at all. And this is without makeup and nary a retouching wand in sight. Following in the footsteps of actresses Monica Bellucci and Sophie Marceau, who went makeup and photoshop-free for French Elle, Helena and a host of other supes including Amber Valletta, Claudia Schiffer and Shalom Harlow bared all for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar. Kinda makes you hate her a little, no? Except I kind of love her for doing this and that the photoshop-free trend is catching on.

I kind of live for smoothies. When I was working from home, I would make daily concoctions with protein powder and all manner of antioxidant-rich berries. Now, I'll take my smoothie fix when I can get it – which is usually when I happen to stumble upon a Booster Juice and gleefully make a beeline towards the teen-staffed counter, asking for a bucket-sized cup of Very Berry goodness (yes, it costs about six bones, but my health is worth it). And while I'd never thought that my lips required such a health elixir, I'm now doing them good by indulging in Clinique's Vitamin C Lip Smoothie. Packed with nourishing and protective antioxidants, these superbly-textured glosses (read: non-sticky) are like giving your lips a daily dose of health-giving vitamins. Rather than a sponge-tip applicator that's standard with most glosses, Lip Smoothie has a brush applicator that makes you feel like a true makeup pro. A twist-up delivery system ensures you get just enough gloss at each application and makes for a decidedly mess-free product. Best of all, this gloss has staying power; whereas some lipglosses are lucky to stay with me past my morning coffee, Lip Smoothie lasted me well beyond noon hour. Most fragrances for women, it seems, are created by men. And while I'm sure men know a thing or three about the scent of a woman, sometimes, it takes a woman to discern what we really want to smell like. Case in point: Lancôme Hypnôse Senses, the latest addition to the Hypnôse family, which was developed by three women (perfumers Christine Nagel, Ursula Wandel and Nathalie Feisthauer). Hypnôse Senses is a modernized interpretation of a "chypre" – a fragrance family which traditionally comprises notes of citrus and floral over a base of earthy oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum (a woody note that can smell of leather). A follow-up to Lancôme's classic chypre from the 1970s Magie Noire, this latest scent features the more trendy top notes of mandarin orange and pink pepper, a heart of apricot-tinged osmanthus blossom, rose and honey and a base of patchouli, rockrose labdanum and Tonka bean. I have to preface this review by saying that I was skeptical of this scent from the get-go, thinking it just wouldn't be for me; that a chypre just isn't my kind of scent, that it would be too heady. And truth be told, I didn't like Hypnôse Senses at first. It seemed too peppery, too spicy, too everything. But after my second try-on, I have to say I'm in love with this scent. Like the satisfaction of finding a great book to read, I've been waiting to sink my teeth into a new, complex fragrance and this one doesn't disappoint. After I got past the peppery top note, I found a gentle fragrance that by turns has the clean smell of soap, soil after rainfall, and the subtly sweet scent of creamy honey at any given whiff. As a skin scent, it takes on the personality of the wearer, and not the other way around. Filled with mystery and intrigue, Hypnôse Senses plays a game of hide-and-seek with you, as it creeps up and surprises you at certain points of the day. For women that like their fragrances to be unexpected, this one is definitely for you. And the spare, curvy glass flaçon with its rosy-hued juice inside is simply elegant sitting atop your dresser.

Oh, how my pores weep in this humidity. Quite literally - they're working over time as the weather heats up, trying to release all that excess oil and sweat. As a result, my skin's looking not only shiny, but the enlarged pores are making it look rough and almost, dare I say it, lizard-like. It's days like these when I wish my pores and their uneven texture would vanish into oblivion, inspiring visions that I could develop a miraculous second skin, a la Diana the lizard alien from the 1980s TV mini-series V (which coincidentally, is making a comeback on TV screens this fall, though likely without said supreme villainess and her scary "medical experiments" and mind control). (Okay, that's a bit of an overstatement, but I wanted to find a way to work in V somehow, which, as a 10-year-old tween, became etched into my subconscious forevermore). But back to pores: Like "The Visitors", there's a lot of misconceptions about pores, so I went about clearing them up in a recent piece for Best Health magazine online. magic wand: nuxe touche prodigieuse

If this little painterly wand, known as Touche Prodigieuse, looks at all familiar to you (like say, By Terry's Light Expert perhaps?), then you're not imagining things. As I learned in the September issue of Elle Canada, Aliza Jabès, founder of the prestige beauty brand Nuxe, is the sister of Terry de Gunzburg, she of luxe beauty brand By Terry and cult-beloved Touche Eclat fame. Touche Prodigieuse is pretty much Light Expert's identical twin – both seek to illuminate skin while correcting and concealing imperfections and both boast an artist-sized brush applicator (likely inspired by de Gunzburg's fondness for paint brushes). What's more, both wands feature tiny little orbs of hyaluronic acid that expand on contact with skin to fill in lines and wrinkles. (Methinks there was some friendly idea-sharing going on between sisters). But while Light Expert undoubtedly came first, there's one key difference between these makeup light sabres: Nuxe's version is subtly peach-toned, which has an uncanny ability to counteract dark circles, making them recede, and bringing flawless skin to the fore. Jabès has also included into the formulation Optical Corrector Pigments in white, yellow, black and red hues to stamp out any and all imperfections. So, like many of Nuxe's multi-purpose products (such as its cult-worthy Huile Prodigieuse, a dry oil that can be used on the face, body and hair), Touche Prodigieuse goes that extra mile, and then some.

quick-change artist: sula paint and peel nail color

Wearing dark nail polish is a kind of bittersweet affair: it looks chicly fabulous at first paint, but it's not long before darkened talons become all chipped and grungy, Courtney Love-style. And the removal process is the worst – smearing around all that dark goo with reeking polish remover usually leads to none-too-fetching polish-stained fingertips. Canadian brand Sula Beauty (of Susanne Lang fragrances fame) has the no-stain solution for the dark polish lover with its Paint and Peel Nail Color. The water-based formulas are like makeup for your nails - you just swipe them on, and when you're ready for a new color, just peel it off, sans mess. When worn on their own, Paint & Peel nailcolors won't last forever (Sula says they'll last as long as your daily foundation makeup), but, when applied with the top and base coats, they'll last you as long as regular nail polish. Formulated without the nasty three (Formaldehyde, Toluene and Phthalates), there's no offensive polish smell, and these nailcolors are also kind to the environment. Plus, in a weird, obsessive-compulsive sort of way, it's immensely satisfying to peel your nails clean. Formerly only available in a handful of shades, Sula's new Paint and Peel trend collection has all manner of shades to satisfy your appreciation of the dark nail arts; I'm loving Crush, a grape-y purple, and the navy-blue Royal.

chanel eye gloss for runway-meets-everyday eyes

You know that glossy eye look you sometimes see on models at runway fashion shows? I've often wondered how makeup artists get that sheeny look (outside of swiping on goopy Vaseline or lipgloss over eyeshadow, of course). Now, I have the answer: Chanel's Eye Gloss, from its fall 2009 collection. It's a lovely quartet of gel/cream shadows in shades of pearly-white, yellowy-gold, burgundy red and basic black that give a sort of grease-paint look that's still sophisticated and sleek. The colors, especially the red and black, may look really intimidating in the pan, but you can glide them on sheer, or layer for a more intensely glistening look. And don't be afraid of the red: though it's a notoriously difficult eyeshadow color to pull off, this one is more of a berry tone that's surprisingly flattering. The Eye Glosses go on like a dream - just use your fingertips or the sponge-tip applicator to swipe them on your lids. The black shade is the perfect way to get sultry blackened eyes as seen on fall runways, a la New York-based designer Yigal Azrouel. Or, simply use the creamy white and gold shades for a more wearable daytime look - the options are endless.

taking the gloss out of lipgloss: benefit love your lipgloss

It's no surprise that with all the statement-making lips on the runways these days (which require major pigment to achieve), that lipstick has been steadily chipping away at lipgloss's shiny armour. As a result, it seems lipglosses have become less "glossy" and more "lipstick-y" of late. And it's not a bad thing, really, since the gloss factor always seems to equal stickiness and that none too pleasant hair-stuck-to-your-lipgloss effect. Enter the new guard of lipgloss, such as Benefit's new cheekily termed Love Your Lipgloss. More like a lip cream than a gloss (but still paired with a soft-cushion applicator), it's got none of the sticky-tacky quality of lipglosses of old. So what you get is a sophisticated shine (read: not the shield-your-eyes-from-the-glare variety), plus tons of moisture and a hint of shimmer. But what I love is the big pigment payoff – perfect for making a statement with your lips. Fresh Squeezed, a pretty corrally-pink, is one of those universally flattering shades that would work on pretty much anyone.

On her whirlwind tour to promote the new Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds, Diane looked flawless at every stop and in Melbourne, Australia yesterday, she did it again. Looking like Karl Lagerfeld's lovechild, she channeled a menswear vibe, complete with bowtie and suspenders, along with a deep-side-parted, low-maintenance updo (you can't see it in this photo, but her hair was again pinned back with copious amounts of plain old bobbypins, which have become the season's staple hair accessory). Paired with minimal makeup in neutral tones and a shimmery pink lip, Diane simply oozes class and grace. She's fast becoming a style icon; is a big designer ad campaign around the corner?

On this civic holiday long weekend in Canadaland, I find myself pondering deep beauty questions, such as: with the weather this hot, should I just cave and chop off all my hair, all edgy, Rihanna-style? I've long admired Rihanna's crop, which was at first reminiscent of Linda Evangelista's in her supermodel heyday, but is now looking all punked-up, with shaved bits here, pompadour there. And with that long section in front, she can really rock any style. But the truth is, I'm too attached to my long hair to go for such a short style. I once had a super-short cut in my early twenties, and couldn't help but feel I looked like a boy. But why is this so? In this month's issue of Elle (the one with the slightly disturbing "not a girl/not yet a woman" Miley Cyrus on the cover), one writer, who chops off her long locks, has her boyfriend tell her that he'd rather she gained 20 pounds than have short hair. Ultimately, their relationship sours.
Turns out, the answer may lie in mother nature: Long hair is inextricably tied to femininity, and is a key marker for availability, say some evolutionary psychologists. A long, healthy mane of hair (or fur), they say, signifies baby-making potential in the animal kingdom, and humans may use this same marker to select a mate. And if you think about it, long hair is the one thing that traditionally separates us, looks-wise, from men.
But then there is this whole shaved-head trend happening, with celebs like Rihanna and Cassie, who sports one side of her head shaved, and the other, with long and flowing locks. Knowingly or not, they're turning these notions of femininity on its ear by going against the norm. But when I look at Rihanna, or people like Halle Berry (who are also obviously supernaturally beautiful), they're no less feminine with short hair than with long. I would never say that they look like boys.
So what say you: Is long hair more feminine than short? Do you have to look like Rihanna to pull off short hair?

I'm rather fond of the fresh-from-the-beach fake flush of a good powder bronzer. To get a believable glow, (which encompasses not only a golden hue, but also a hint of pinched-cheek pink), I've tried to strategically layer on my bronzer and blush, but the result is often a paint-by-numbers-ish look (think: blush-stripe here, bronzer-stripe there). beauty multi-tasking: jouviance ecorejuvenation anti-aging cream

I'm always a bit skeptical of trying out new skincare products; anything labelled "anti-aging" usually sets in motion the fear of monstrous breakouts and oily eruptions. But I was recently pleasantly surprised when I discovered Jouviance, a Canadian dermatological skincare brand. I was especially intrigued by Jouviance's 3-in-1 anti-aging concept, which encompasses a day, night and eye cream in one product – the EcoRejuvenation Anti-Aging Cream. The idea of using one cream is definitely a novel idea and one which I can totally get behind (hello, beauty time-saver!). And it turns out I'm in love with the EcoRejuvenation Anti-Aging Cream. It's packed with all manner of peptides and skin-friendly omega fatty acids, but contains nothing harsh that could inflame delicate skin, such as parabens, fragrances or colors. It also doesn't have any retinol or AHAs, which can be public enemy number one for sensitive skin types. The EcoRejuvenation Anti-Aging Cream is available in two formulations: one for normal to dry and one for oily/combination skin, which is the one I'm currently using. More like a lotion than a cream, it lightly moisturizes without feeling heavy, and I've been using it for the last week or so, with no breakouts in sight. This cream promises smoother and brighter skin in four weeks, and while I'm not expecting miracles, I will report back on my progress in the weeks to come. One caveat: Jouviance doesn't contain sunscreen (a bit of a drawback for me, since I don't want to have to put on two creams in the morning), so don't forget to slather on the SPF before you step outside.

skin fix: ole henriksen on the go cleanser

Regular readers of this blog will know that I'm a bit of a citrus fiend when it comes to beauty products. Especially in the summer, there's quite possibly nothing more refreshing than a blast of citrus scent to cut through the heat and humidity (case in point: the lemon sugar-y scent, Fresh Sugar Blossom, which is my summer fragrance staple). the body shop's coconut body butter smells like the beach

Me and sweet-smelling beauty products have a long and storied history, but I seemed to be getting over that fixation over the last year or so, in favor of more sophisticated (read: less sickly sweet) scents. But sweet, when done right, can also have its merits, especially when it smells like the beach, as is the case with The Body Shop's Coconut Body Butter. It has a sweet yet earthy scent that smells like true, fresh coconuts - the kind that Tom Hanks subsisted on in the movie Cast Away and that can't help but bring to mind lazy, languorous, sun-drenched days. As with most of The Body Shop's butters, the Coconut Body Butter feels a bit like slathering on an actual stick of butter, as its infused with shea and cocoa butters, along with organic coconut oil, to deliver its rich, thick and lush texture. And at first, I found it too rich for the summer months, however, I discovered that the trick is to use it sparingly, because a little goes a long way. I love the slightly sheeny look it gives to my skin, and of course, the scent, which carries me away to warmer climes even when I'm stuck in the office and there's nary a ray of sunshine in sight.

Finally, a celeb that brings it, beauty-wise, on the red carpet. I loved Jennifer Connelly's sunnier disposition at her recent appearance at Comic Con, where she was promoting her new film 9. Usually, Jennifer plays up her flawless porcelain skin (which can look a bit stark next to her raven hair), but this time out, she's warmed up her complexion with a bit of bronzer on the spots where the sun would hit (forehead, nose and cheeks) and added some peachy blush to further liven things up. But what I really noticed about Jen's look is that statement-making coral lip - the perfect summer accessory. The color provides the perfect contrast to her gorgeous green eyes, and really makes them pop. What pulls it all together for me is that she's also paired these orangey makeup shades (coral, peach) with a navy blue dress, matching complementary color tones. All told, I think this look makes Jennifer seem more approachable and even younger.

moroccanoil: the gold standard for hair

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd actually enjoy putting oil in my hair. As a fine-haired lass, the thought of putting anything with the merest hint of oil usually sends me running for the hills. But that was before I met MoroccanOil. The product obsession of many a beauty editor, the original MoroccanOil Treatment is based on the miracle ingredient argan oil – the centuries-old beauty secret weapon of Moroccan women (and an ingredient which I've raved about before). It's a hair-styling and finishing product that smooths, conditions and protects, bringing life back to tired and parched strands with its vitamin and omega fatty acid-infused formula. I think it's important to know that despite its name, MoroccanOil is not entirely made of oil (which may help allay your fears of dunking your head in a vat of grease); it also contains ingredients such as dimethicone, a silicone-based polymer commonly used in hair products that conditions, gives shine and helps hair repel water (read: the frizzies). So, unlike Josie Maran's Argan Oil, which is actually 100% argan oil and can be used virtually anywhere, including your face, I wouldn't recommend using MoroccanOil for anything other than your hair. After one use, I was astonished at how quickly MoroccanOil absorbed into my hair without the slightest greasy feel. Applying MoroccanOil to my damp hair pre-styling also helped tame and manage my sometimes frizz-prone waves and imparted mega-shine and touchable softness (my hair has never felt so silky - I can't stop touching it!). The ultimate test? I've even let my hair air-dry, with nothing applied to it but MoroccanOil, and my hair looked pretty freakin' fantastic, sans styling. In short, MoroccanOil lets hair be all it can be. I'm also intrigued that you can use MoroccanOil Treatment before you color your hair, to ensure better color absorption and an even result. I'm so trying it out when next I do my DIY hair-dye.
