Anything Tom Ford touches is as good as gold to me, which is why I was ecstatic to try his Black Orchid fragrance line. The original Black Orchid fragrance (which I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing) is an earthy mix of black truffle, bergamot, dark florals, vanilla and lotus wood. While his latest, Black Orchid Fleur de Voile, has a musky – and certainly floral – air about it, it isn't a statement-making kind of fragrance for which the original is known. And that might be a good thing. I've heard that Orchid #1 is a bit too heady, a bit too sweet. While Voile de Fleur has some similar notes as its bombshell sister, including Ford's signature black orchids, this one has a sparkly citrus-floral sensibility that's sexy without being overpowering. It has an oriental quality to it that reminds me of the ubiquitous 80s scent, Opium. Since its an eau de toilette, Voile de Fleur goes on lightly, so as not to overstay its welcome. If anything, I almost wish it was deeper in scent, so that the fragrance would stay with me throughout the day.
